Gwen Griffin is a 28-year veteran of the communications industry, serving in various corporate and agency roles during her professional tenure. Currently, she is President and CEO of Griffin Communications Group, a full-service strategic communications and branding firm established in 1997 headquartered in Houston.
Throughout her career, Gwen has managed a wide array of communications programs, including: public affairs, advocacy campaigns, strategic planning, image and brand campaigns, media relations, corporate communications, crisis communications, advertising, strategic alliances/sponsorships, community relations and research.
As President and CEO, she spearheads the day-to-day operations of the agency and has evolved the 16-year-old firm into a nationally recognized strategic communications leader in the aerospace, energy and technology sectors.
Gwen’s previous corporate positions include Director of Marketing for NASA-Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Public Relations/Promotions Manager for Space Center Houston, Area Marketing Manager for Southwest Airlines, Public Relations Manager for First Trading Corporation, Marketing Communications Specialist for McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company and Communications Associate for TRW, Inc.
Among her public relations agency experience, Gwen worked as a Senior Account Manager for firms including Edelman Public Relations Worldwide and Dancie Perugini Ware Public Relations.
Gwen is a graduate of the University of Central Florida with a degree in journalism specializing in public relations and advertising.
She is Chairman of the board of directors of Challenger Center for Space Science Education and serves other STEM education organizations, including being a founding board member for the Conrad Foundation; officer of the Space Center Houston board; and Advisory Council member for the College of Sciences at The University of Central Florida. She is also a current board member of the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership.
Jeff Carr is Senior Vice President of Aerospace Communications. Since early 2010, he has led Griffin’s national aerospace practice, overseeing the development and execution of leading-edge strategic communications programs and projects for clients such as Virgin Galactic, Orbital Sciences Corporation, Inspiration Mars and the Coalition for Space Exploration.
Jeff has more than 30 years of aerospace communications and public relations experience, 20 of which were spent serving in key management roles, overseeing a wide spectrum of strategic communications resources and programs.
Prior to joining Griffin, he spent 13 years at United Space Alliance as Director of Communications and Public Relations. Reporting to the President and CEO, he managed the company’s brand identity and reputation through strategic communications, including media relations, community relations, customer relations, state and local government relations, marketing communications and advertising.
During his NASA career, he worked as Director of Public Affairs and as News Chief at the NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. In 1993, he served as Special Assistant to the NASA Administrator, providing critical transition support and lending insight to key issues and activities for NASA during the early months of the Clinton Administration. He also served as press liaison for the Astronaut Corps and as the “Voice of Mission Control” for more than 40 Space Shuttle missions.
Jeff holds three Telly Awards for national achievement in media production. He received the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal and was a member of the NASA/Industry Communications Team that won the RNASA Space Communicator Award in 2006.
Marti Boone – Senior Vice President of Energy & Technology
Marti currently serves as Senior Vice President of Energy & Technology. In her leadership role, she oversees the day-to-day management of this specialized practice, including strategic counsel, client relations, branding, creative direction and associated business development.
Marti has extensive national and international marketing and communications experience garnered from positions in broadcast journalism, economic development, news media and chambers of commerce organizations. Her vast experience encompasses strategic marketing, branding, crisis communications, public relations, internal corporate communications, digital marketing, social media, business development, investor retention, B2B publishing and in-kind leverage programs.
Prior to joining the agency, Marti spent three years as Senior Vice President Economic Development Marketing for the Greater Houston Partnership (GHP) where she was responsible for Opportunity Houston – one of the most successful economic development marketing programs in the United States. Marti worked closely with the Mayor’s office, Governor’s office, and local energy, technology, aerospace and biotech leaders to strategically promote Houston as a business magnet in order to expand and relocate businesses, with the overarching goal of fostering job creation and economic prosperity. Under her direction, the marketing and communications divisions helped the GHP and Houston region reach unprecedented earned media heights with more than $55 million in editorial coverage and over 200 million media impressions from 2008 to 2011. Marti also served as Managing Editor for Opportunity Houston magazine.
Her award-winning campaigns, market launches and support programs have been translated in more than 15 languages and implemented in the U.S., Canada, South America, Europe and Asia. Her team received 2008 and 2009 awards for “Marketer of the Year: Economic Development Marketing” by the American Marketing Association, Houston Chapter.
Marti is the Chairman of the Petrochemical Committee for the Galveston County Economic Alliance. Additionally, she serves on the Oil & Gas Subcommittee and Renewables & Energy Efficiency Subcommittee at the Greater Houston Partnership.
Key Account Leads
Deanna Wilke, Senior Account Manager, brings 14 years of experience in the strategic communications arena to the Griffin team. She serves as a critical link between the executive leadership team and account staff on emerging trends and issues. While developing and managing the Griffin team of account executives is one of her primary responsibilities, optimizing the team’s work to deliver the best and most efficient results for our clients is where she excels.
Media relations work is Deanna’s forte. Building strong relationships with journalists around the world to share and shape the powerful stories of our clients is important to her and Griffin. Deanna works with many of our clients on their media outreach, including Virgin Galactic, Inspiration Mars, Orbital Sciences Corp., Sierra Nevada and more. She has spearheaded media relations events that have resulted in billions of media impressions and multi-millions in media value. Several of these events have resulted in awards for the agency.
Publications are another passion of Deanna’s, having managed a variety of interactive magazines for Lockheed Martin, ranging from technical engineering and technology pieces to a corporate sustainability report for the Corporation. Deanna also managed all aspects of production (editorial, design, printing and distribution) for the award-winning Endeavour Lifestyles, a quarterly, full-color luxury magazine in Houston with a circulation of 50,000.
Other experience includes branding, strategic communications and crisis work with a variety of clients, including U.S. Zinc, CVR Energy, Korn/Ferry International, SSC and the Coalition for Space Exploration. Deanna led a branding effort for U.S. Zinc that resulted in a powerful new suite of ads and collateral materials that work in tandem to build company awareness. She also conceptualized and led an award-winning internal communications campaign for U.S. Zinc.
Prior to joining Griffin, she served as the Advertising Director for Kernel Press, Inc. and University of Kentucky News in Lexington, Ky., where she was responsible for the primary revenue stream of a nearly $1 million operation. Through Deanna’s management and leadership of various departments, including advertising sales, advertising creative services and public relations/promotions, she was able to increase revenue and add secondary revenue streams.
Deanna serves on the board of directors for the Clear Creek Education Foundation and its community outreach committee.
Brooke has been working in the communications field for nearly 20 years. She joined Griffin nine months after its launch in fall 1998 as a Senior Account Manager overseeing the public relations launch of Sprint PCS in the Houston market, which was deemed the most successful market launch in company history. One year later, she assumed her current role as Senior Editor, where she drafts and edits pieces ranging from strategic communications plans, messaging platforms and new business proposals to press documents, collateral materials, websites and more. Her client writing materials have been featured in major newspapers and trade publications throughout the U.S.
In addition, Brooke serves as Account Manager for two Griffin clients. For Bodycote, she develops and manages a suite of strategic communications materials that have helped the company’s Aerospace, Energy & Defence division experience a 15 percent growth in sales in the last two years. For Blue Origin, she provides counsel and media relations support to this emerging commercial space transportation company.
Prior to joining Griffin, Brooke served as Marketing Director for KHMX-FM (Mix 96.5), where she created, planned and executed all special events and promotions, including the MIX 96.5 Baby Expo (4 years); New Year’s Eve Houston, MIX 96.5 Private Performance Series (4 years); MIX 96.5 Red, White & Boom! She also managed all marketing for the station, including advertising, PR, direct mail, telemarketing and more. Her tenure at the station earned her back-to-back nominations for “Marketing Director of the Year” by Billboard & Airplay Monitor magazines.
A journalism graduate from The University of Texas at Austin, Brooke began her career at Dancie Perugini Ware Public Relations in Houston as an Assistant Account Executive.
Sean has been working in the communications field for more than 14 years, joining the Griffin team in September 2011. She applies her media relations and strategic communications experience for accounts including the Coalition for Space Exploration, Virgin Galactic, the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS) and U.S. Zinc. In 2012, she managed all media relations for ISPCS, which resulted in a 120 percent increase in media attendance over the previous year. For U.S. Zinc, Sean supported a company-wide, internal awareness campaign that increased employee knowledge of U.S. Zinc’s products and customers.
Before joining the agency, Sean worked as a communications manager for Easterly & Company, where she managed internal and external communications for the Boeing/Space Exploration division account during the final year of the Space Shuttle Program. As a public relations specialist for the NASA-Johnson Space Center, she developed and managed strategic communications plans for the International Space Station (ISS) and Constellation programs. While at JSC, Sean received recognition for her innovative communications strategies with the “I am an Innovator” award in 2009. Other notable experience includes Publication Manager for the Space Shuttle Program’s Rendezvous magazine for the Futron Corporation and Senior Staff Assistant at MEI Technologies where she coordinated liaison activities between the Canadian Space Agency and NASA’s ISS Robotics Office.
Before moving into the communications field in 1999, Sean served in the U.S. Air Force as a Satellite Systems Operator and Instructor for the Global Positioning System for four years. In addition to being a veteran, Sean holds a B.A in communication and an M.A. in professional writing and applied design, both from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
